A Journey of Learning and Hospitality: My Experience at OSAO in Finland

In September 2022, I embarked on an exciting adventure at OSAO to pursue a qualification in tourism.   Upon arriving at OSAO for the entrance exam and interview, a friendly student approached me and asked about my chosen field of study. When I mentioned tourism, she remarked, ”You’ve chosen the right profession; your smiling demeanor seems perfect for hospitality.” I was inspired by her words.

October marked the beginning of my official enrollment at OSAO, where I joined the first class taught entirely in English. This exposure to Finnish education left me impressed with the quality and uniqueness of vocational education in the country.

The teachers at OSAO were not just educators but also welcoming and approachable mentors. Whenever I needed assistance, their prompt responses and patient guidance made a significant impact. Their dedication and attention to detail moved me, making me feel supported throughout my learning journey.

My first internship took place at the Oulu Art Museum, where the supervisor displayed exceptional patience and guidance. When expressing my gratitude at the end of the internship, she shared a Finnish saying: ”metsä vastaa kuin sinne huudetaan.” emphasizing the reciprocity of kindness between individuals.

The curriculum was thoughtfully designed, incorporating engaging elements like classes held in the forest. I thought my tutor teacher Anu is a super woman and She is so skilled for outdoor activities. For international students like myself, this was a fascinating and enjoyable experience, where we learned practical skills related to outdoor tourism.

OSAO stands out for its focus on hands-on experience. The mix of theory and practice, along with feedback from school and internships, gave me a thorough grasp of job market needs and different professional roles.

In February 2024, I completed my studies, coinciding with a robust recovery in the tourism industry. As we step into a world where hospitality is paramount, I hope to apply the knowledge and skills gained at OSAO, warmly welcoming visitors from around the globe.
